The Introduction of PCT Youth (TKC)

We believe that the Church is the fellowship of God’s people, called to proclaim the salvation of Jesus Christ and to be ambassador of reconciliation. It is both universal and rooted in this land, identifying with all its inhabitants, and through love and suffering becoming the sign of hope.
“Confession of Faith of The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan”

148 years ago, the first generation foreign missionaries (James L. Maxwell, George L. Mackay…etc.) brought the gospel to Taiwan by setting up hospital, schools and churches. They established a solid foundation for the PCT in Taiwan for mission and evangelism. Since then, the PCT has always sought to become indigenous, to root itself in the land of Taiwan through caring for and identification with all that affect the welfare of the people in Taiwan.
In the 1970s, Taiwan had to withdrawal from United Nation due to the pressure from the international community and the threats from China thus gradually increasing Taiwan’s international isolation. The political situation in Taiwan became destabilized and chaotic. Therefore, the PCT issued three statements during this period, as a matter of its faith and Christian witness, and urged the government to set up a “new and independent country.” These statements led the government to persecute and oppress the PCT. Nevertheless, these trials strengthened the witness to the gospel and enabled the PCT to demonstrate to the society its steadfastness of faith. Currently, in preparation for its 150th anniversary in 2015, the PCT is actively promoting “one lead one doubling movement”, hoping to upgrade the quality and quantity of Christian growth through: 1. Evangelism; 2. Christian nurture; 3. Service with agape; 4. Social reform; 5. Caring for the creation; 6. Gospel and culture.

In 1949, Tai-oan ki-tok tiun-lo Kau-hoe Chheng-lian thoan-khe(TKC) was set up. Over the past 60 years, the PCT Youth Movement urged the establishment of general assembly and the unity of the church. In the society, PCT Youth Movement played a prophetic role to renew the Taiwan society.

Therefore, in order to respond the theme of WCC 10th Assembly, PCT Youth began preparations in 2012. After many discussion sessions and prayerful reflection, we decided on four priorities:

1. Future of Taiwan,
2. Anti-Nuclear Policy,
3. Youth Poverty,
4. LGBT.

We hope to make the Ecumenical Movement know more about Taiwan and we expect to receive the care and support of the churches from around the world. In the Madang exhibitions we present the beautiful Taiwan, with its ethnic diversity and multi-cultures. Taiwan is a multi-ethnic country. In Han branch, we have Hakka group and Ho-Lo group. In Austronesian branch, there are more than ten ethnic groups. Every Sunday, the PCT congregations have worship services in more than 17 languages.

We will use music and art from our multi-cultures to show the abundance of Taiwan during Madang exhibition. Our newly published “Hymnal”, has more than 100 selections from 73 countries and many majestic ecumenical hymns. We expect, with our energy and creativity, we will show the ecumenical movement our burning issues and the beauty of Taiwanese culture. We believe, by the open-mind and ideas from youths, we will become the bridge of ecumenism.
